If your kitchen sink drains slower every month, you are not alone. Around Rhome, Justin, Decatur and the rest of our service area, clogged drains are the call we get most.
The usual suspects
Grease is the number one cause of kitchen clogs. It goes down warm and liquid, then cools and sticks to the inside of the pipe. Coffee grounds, rice and pasta add to the buildup. In bathrooms, hair and soap scum do the same job.
Outside the house, our clay soil matters. North Texas clay swells when it is wet and shrinks during a dry summer, which can cause sewer lines to sag. A sagging section holds water and waste, and clogs form there again and again.
What you can do
- Wipe greasy pans with a paper towel before washing them.
- Use a strainer in kitchen and tub drains.
- Run hot water for 15 seconds after using the disposal.
- Skip chemical drain cleaners. They can damage older pipes and rarely clear the real blockage.
When to call
If more than one drain is slow, if you hear gurgling from a toilet when the sink drains, or if a clog comes back within a few weeks, the problem is likely deeper in the line. We run a camera through the pipe first, so you can see whether it is grease, roots or a sagging pipe before you spend money on a fix.
